Introduction
Sam Altman recently introduced the innovative idea of “Universal Basic Compute.” This program would democratize access to artificial intelligence distributing a portion of the massive processing capacity behind OpenAI‘s GPT-5, one of the world’s most powerful language models.
“I am not a super fan of how the government has handled most policies designed to help poor people,” says OpenAI chief.“
“I wonder if the future looks something more like Universal Basic Compute than Universal Basic Income, and everybody gets like a slice of GPT-5 compute,” said Altman, in the recent episode of the All-in podcast.
Universal Basic Compute; Distributing Processing Power, Not Money
He indicated that this would not be a direct cash distribution, but rather an allocation. This allowance would represent a part of GPT-5’s processing capacity. Imagine giving everyone a little electricity voucher, but instead of fueling the lights, it would power AI jobs. This “compute credit” could then be applied in a number of ways. People could use it for personal projects, sell it to those who need more processing power, or even donate it to a good cause. Consider researchers utilizing donated compute credits to speed up cancer research or humanitarian organizations using them to analyze data and enhance aid distribution.

Sam Altman acknowledges the limitations of the current social safety net and realizes it is broken.
“Giving folks money won’t address all their issues. It will absolutely not make anyone happy. However, it may solve a few difficulties. It may provide people with a greater vista from which to help themselves,” Sam Altman
He also added that things are changing and there should be a better alternative to traditional Universal Basic Income. As a result, we could have Universal Basic Compute. This new development comes on the heels of Altman’s contentious statement, “I don’t care if we burn 50 billion a year, we’re building AGI.”
